a project by Laurent SAINT-VAL
Unbuilt

In an effort to design sustainable new housing prototypes for Haiti, architect Laurent Saint-Val unveiled a designed inspired by the traditional art of basketry by weaving natural plant fibres, including bamboo,  from the local habitat into a cocoon-shape structure.

Saint-Val compares the residential structure to the carving of a totem pole, noting the sacred correlation and explaining: “It’s an architecture that segments space and which translates well the transient character of these habitats.”

Gramazio & Kohler use the term digital materiality to describe an emerging transformation in the expression of architecture. Materiality is increasingly being enriched with digital characteristics, substantially affecting architecture’s physis. Digital materiality evolves through the interplay between digital and material processes in design and construction. The synthesis of two seemingly distinct worlds – the digital and the material – generates new, self-evident realities. Data and material, programming and construction are interwoven. This synthesis is enabled by the techniques of digital fabrication, which allows the architect to control the manufacturing process through design data. Material is thus enriched by information; material becomes “informed.” In the future, architects’ ideas will entirely permeate the fabrication process. This new situation transforms the possibilities and thus the professional scope of the architect.
In 2000, Matthias Kohler and Fabio Gramazio created their partnership, the Zurich architecture and urbanism practice, Gramazio & Kohler.
They have been professors of Architecture and Digital Fabrication at the ETH Zurich Faculty of Architecture since 2005.
